Money Smarts - Inspiration & Education
As a solo mum, time and energy are often stretched, so it’s important to think creatively. I’ve found these resources especially useful. They make it easy to get ahead, spark ideas for additional sources of income, and show practical ways to trim expenses. Some of the resources are from overseas, but the core principles are just as relevant here in New Zealand.
New Zealand MoneyHub
You cannot miss this resource! The New Zealand Money Hub is packed with practical insights, tips, and educational content around managing your finances, budgeting, investing, and planning for the future.
I highly recommend browsing through it and subscribing to stay updated. Whether you’re just starting your financial journey or looking for new ways to optimize your money, it’s a goldmine of knowledge.
And it does have a dedicated Single Parenting Money guide - 10 Things you need to know. Another place to start are the 20-Must-Know Money lessons and the Best personal finance Books for New Zealanders (I can’t recommend The Psychology of Money enough).

New Zealand Happy Saver Podcast
The Happy Saver podcast, hosted by Ruth, focuses on helping everyday Kiwis take control of their finances and make informed decisions about saving, investing, and building wealth. I’d like to shine a spotlight on Episode 36: A Story About a Mum Coming Out the Other End After Divorce. The conversation delves into the emotional and financial challenges she faced and probably resonates with many of us

In her interview on The Diary of a CEO, Nischa Shah, a former investment banker turned personal finance educator, shared transformative insights into financial independence and wealth-building strategies. I loved how she breaks down key principles for every day life and makes financial strategies tangible for everyone. Also available as podcast.
